What is a Community Justice Navigator?

A Community Justice Navigator or simply a ‘Navigator’ is a new role at Rosie’s Place and is funded by the NSW Government. The NSW Department of Communities and Justice refers to this role as a ‘sexual violence justice system navigator’.

A Navigator provides free, survivor-centred, trauma-and-violence-informed support to people aged 16 years and over who have experienced recent or historical sexual violence.

The role of a Navigator is to help people understand what options are available to support a survivor in seeking justice.

Your choice in justice will always remain yours.

For some people, justice may mean reporting to police and going through the criminal justice system. For someone else, justice may mean being heard and believed, understanding why a matter did not proceed, knowing their rights, having their experience acknowledged, exploring compensation or other pathways, or simply having enough information to decide what they want to do next.

The navigator’s role is to help make things clearer while keeping your choices with you.

Navigators can assist with:

  • explaining your rights and options

  • listening to your questions and concerns

  • helping you understand what it might be like to speak with police

  • helping you prepare if you decide you would like to speak with police

  • explaining what may happen if you choose to make a police report or take further legal action

  • helping you prepare for appointments or other important conversations

  • helping you understand different stages of an investigation or court process

  • explaining legal and justice system language in everyday terms

  • supporting you to communicate with police, legal or other services

  • helping you access information about what is happening with your matter

  • connecting you with legal, counselling, health and other specialist services

  • exploring other pathways options that may be available

How can Rosie’s Place help?

If you are aged 16 years or over and have experienced sexual violence, you can contact a Community Justice Navigator about any of the following:

  • information on your rights, choices or justice pathways

  • if you are thinking about whether to report to the police

  • if you have already reported and need information about what happens next

  • if you are involved in an investigation or court process

  • if you have questions about a previous matter

  • further information on other options that may be available to you
